The most economical way is to loan from a friend. and don't buy 1 big one. separate your luggage into 2 or 3 pcs. In case you lose one during transition in the airport. and always bring a small cabin bag. medium size bag is the best for check-in and to be brought in the car trunk. if you need i have 1 to loan you. also, get hard casing if you really decide to buy. the good ones are very light and they protect your things in case u buy easily breakable stuff. Also, the zipped ones are easy to tamper with. to be honest, unless you guys plan to travel very often, i don't suggest you buy a one. loaning is better. :) or else the piece of luggage takes up a space & storage at home.
if u need to buy, go to any dept store and ask them. A very good one (like samsonite... my fav brand) will be able to endure your weight if u step on it and it won't break. i can't remember the material off hand. cos when ur luggage is checked in, they are stacked up pretty high and the pressure is tremendous. of course, before you step on it, ask them first. then ask them for a plastic cover to put on top of the luggage so that your shoes doesn't scratch it and u hv to buy. :)
